EXECUTIVE VICE PRESIDENT FOR EXTERNAL AFFAIRS
UNIVERSITY of DUBUQUE
American Antiquarian Society
Worcester, MA
“To collect, to preserve, and to make accessible for study a comprehensive library of research materials
documenting American history and culture through 1876, and to contribute to a shared understanding of
who and what made America what it is today.”
The American Antiquarian Society (AAS) seeks a dynamic and experienced Executive Vice President for
External Affairs (EVP) to provide strategic vision, leadership, and direction for all fundraising, membership,
stewardship, and external affairs activities during an exciting time of celebration and expansion. Reporting
directly to President Ellen S. Dunlap, this position is responsible for designing, articulating, and
implementing a successful fundraising program, including the preparation and execution of a
comprehensive capital campaign to coincide with the Society’s bicentennial. The EVP will play a central
role in enhancing the visibility and fundraising capabilities of the Society, leading it to even greater
prominence within national academic and cultural communities.
Founded by Isaiah Thomas in 1812, AAS is the first American historical organization designed to be
national in its membership and scope of collections. Today, it is both a national research library and a
learned society dedicated to pre-twentieth century American history and culture. The library’s collections
contain more than two-thirds of all the known imprints created in America before 1821, and the Society is
considered to be the greatest single repository of such materials in the world. The AAS collections of
nineteenth-century imprints are lauded for both their depth and breadth. The collections begin with the first
English-language book printed in America in 1640 and continue through the year 1876, when the nation
celebrated its centennial. Including more than one million books, pamphlets, graphics, and ephemera
items, two million newspaper issues, and one million manuscript pages, the AAS collections serve a
worldwide community of scholars, teachers, historians, bibliographers, students, and authors whose
research at the Society enhances the quality of humanistic knowledge and education in the United States
and abroad. The Society is supported by its members, scholars, friends, and numerous foundation and
federal partnerships, generating the strong financial condition of the institution with an annual operating
budget of approximately $5 million. In 2012, the Society will celebrate its bicentennial and has begun to
plan a capital campaign to seek the resources it will need to achieve its vision for growth in its third century.

of the library and the director of finance and administration.
