Reporting to Chancellor Anne Ponder, the Vice Chancellor for Advancement will provide dynamic leadership
to shape and implement the University’s advancement program; lead a development, alumni and university
events staff of fifteen; and provide development expertise to the Chancellor, Trustees and the UNC Asheville
Foundation. A member of the Chancellor’s Senior Staff, the new chief advancement officer will be expected to
build on the advancement program’s recent successes and collaboratively assist with the overall leadership of the
institution. UNC Asheville raised $3.2 million in 2010. Higher levels were achieved in 2008 and 2009 ($4.6
and $9.4, respectively) through fundraising for specific capital needs. As of June 30, 2011, the University’s two
endowments had a market value of $27.8 million.
VICE PRESIDENT FOR PROGRAMS
The Marin Community Foundation (San Francisco Bay Area) is one of
America’s largest community foundations, with $1.2 billion in assets,
$77 million in contributions received, and $57 million in grants
committed this past year. The Vice President for Programs supervises
6 program directors and a total staff of 12, guiding grants, loans,
and program-related convening, while integrating program efforts
with all other functions of the Foundation and participating in the
executive team of the Foundation. In addition to general grantmaking
to respond to community need (aging, arts in the schools, immigrant
services, etc.), the Program staff devote themselves to several strategic
programmatic initiatives: enhancement of public school achievement
of underperforming children; promotion of affordable housing,
especially with special needs populations; increasing economic
security of low income Marin residents. The successful leader in
this key position is offered an opportunity for significant community
impact and personal achievement.
The ideal candidate will be a seasoned advancement professional with a minimum of ten years of progressively
responsible development experience and demonstrated success in fundraising. The next Vice Chancellor will be
an effective advocate, communicator and fundraiser; a strategic, innovative manager and mentor; a professional
with comprehensive knowledge of development and an understanding of how alumni, communications and
marketing contribute to a successful university advancement program; a leader with strong interpersonal and
relationship building skills and a trusted advisor to University leadership.
